A recommendation for a cheap PCI card which Just Works with Ubuntu Intrepid: MSI PC60G-F. I fully expect it to work with other distributions as well, but I am generally looking for solutions which would work with at least an Ubuntu live CD.

In Serbia, you can get it for 1400 RSD.

which chipset does it have?

Thanks!  That's exactly what I've been looking for.

I am a bit curious about the chipset myself, but as long as it does indeed Just Work with Ubuntu, well...  I'm buying two.

...It doesn't seem there's much if any difference between PC60G and PC60G-F..

'course, now that I notice that, I /hope/ there's no real difference anyways.

Just got my confirmation email on the order..

It's very hard to ever safely recommend any 'model' of wireless card, because wireless card manufacturers have this endearing habit of switching wireless chipset provider (depending on whose cheapest that particular microsecond, I guess) without bothering to change the model names.

So you might buy something like Foo Wireless WMGVBS-54GBK , which uses a zd1211 chipset and works perfectly out of the box on anything. Then the next week, you (or someone else) buys another Foo Wireless WMGVBS-54GBK , and finds it has a Broadcom chipset. Cue wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Often they will denote the first one as WMGVBS-54GBK v1 and the second as WMGVBS-54GBK v2, but the 'versions' will never be printed on the box or listed in any online store's information. If it's printed anywhere, it'll be on the PCB somewhere. In tiny, tiny letters.

In other words, buying a wireless card is never safe. My preferred method is to buy somewhere with a no-questions-asked returns policy, and buy the cheapest card. Take it home, try it out (or just take your laptop and do it in the store). If it doesn't work, return it and trade up to the second-cheapest. Rinse and repeat till you find one that works.

Adam, that's what I was afraid of.
They should not do that.
One of these will be the only internet connection the machine it's going into /has/...  It's kind of old, you know...  PCI is the most modern thing about it..
With Atheros having gone open and Dell having convinced Broadcom to make linux drivers though, my chances are greatly improved with whatever chipset they're using..  I guess in a few days I'll see..

This one uses "atheros" chipset. If anyone wants more details, I can take photographs of the box and the card itself, and read any smallprint "revision" details.
