After a few months of planning, and some more months waiting for the car (both in Serbian), my girlfriend and me are ready to set off through Europe.

My "practice drive" (with my sister as a "navigator" :) to GUADEC and back (~2000km total) went fine, though with a replacement car.

Main destination is going to be Alicante, Spain, visiting Carlos Perelló Marín, but on the way there and back, we are going to stop by a few cities.

The rough plan is as follows:

WhenWhereWhat
Thursday,
July 17th
Belgrade (morning) — Vienna (afternoon) Driving in the morning, some looking around in the afternoon
Friday, 18th Vienna (morning), drive to Brno (afternoon) Sightseeing, visiting Miljan
Saturday, 19th Brno to Munich (morning) Afternoon/evening/sleep-over in Munich
Sunday, 20th Munich to somewhere in France Driving over Karlsruhe (to avoid Switzerland for which I'd need a separate visa) for most of the day with long breaks (need to go over at least 1000km)
Monday, 21st Somewhere in France to Alicante Another day of mostly driving: totally missing out on central France for lack of time :(, arrive in Alicante in the evening
Tuesday 22nd–Friday 25th Alicante Few days of enjoying the beach
Saturday 26th Barcelona Morning drive to Barcelona, sightseeing the city
Sunday 27th Barcelona Sightseeing the city
Monday 28th Barcelona—Nice Early start, evening in Nice
Tuesday 29th Nice, Monte Carlo Touristy stuff
Wednesday 30th To Venezia Sightseeing, sleep-over
Thursday 31st To Belgrade Long drive home over Slovenia and Croatia

Though, going by car, the entire plan is open for change.

I've figured out where to stay in Vienna, Brno and Alicante, but will gladly accept recommendations for cheap accommodation for rest of the stops :) Any tips on the parking regime and similar won't be wasted either.

What about the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany? ;-)

@Ed: some other time, two weeks is just not enough. I actually have two more trips on my mind: one for Italy, and one for the Germany, likely Netherlands as well. :)

If somewhere in France can be Grenoble, feel free to come and say hi. You can even sleep in my appartment (although it won't be really comfortable since it's still a bit empty ;-) and I'm not sure yet if I'll be there). Drop me a mail if you're interested.

Tips on road tolls: in Hungary, Austria and (I think) Czech, you have to buy so-called "vignettes" on entering the country. Those are stickers (or just papers) that allow you to drive on the country's highways for a period of time (shortest is 4 days in Hungary, 10 days Austria). These are very efficient and inexpensive toll systems, just don't forget to buy the stickers on the border. In Germany, autobahns are free of toll :). In France, Spain, Italy and Serbia you will have to pay per road section covered :( on toll gates.

Also watch for speeding cameras (if the limit is <=100 I suggest you obey, +10-20 will be tolerated though). In Germany some autobahns seem to be limit-free, so you can try out you new drive properly.

Another tip for saving money on the road: avoid re-filling on highway gas stations, as fuel is more expensive there. Find inexpensive stations in the cities you visit and then fill the tank up full. When driving 1000km in a day, though, you'll probably be forced to stop on the highway for re-fills.

And the biggest money and time saving tip of all: never go to Spain via Brno :o). I hope your car's got cruise control :o).

Vrzo, thanks for the tips. Going through Brno made it more interesting, but cruise control helped only somewhat when the roads were crowded. More comments later today in a separate blog post. :)
